Según el video y el argumento de American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia es un chico que vive con su madre divorciada y el novio de ésta, Brad, en un barrio ficticio, Jingletown.
La infancia la pasó viendo la televisión “en una firme dieta de gaseosa y Ritalin”, y probando drogas ajenas (I – Jesus Of Suburbia).
Durante marzo, se siente desconforme con su vida en Jingletown, cree que ese no es su lugar (II – City Of The Damned), se siente rechazado y piensa que sus hipócritas amigos lo han abandonado y traicionado (III – I Don’t Care) y eso provoca que termine yendo a terapia para llenar su “vacío espiritual” (IV – Dearly Beloved), tras eso, Jesus decide dejar su barrio e irse a “La Ciudad” (V – Tales from Another Broken Home).
